for the time being, outdoor air systems (oas) are not well-known to people mainly because oas are new to the chinese market and they are a little more complicated in installation than air purifiers. oas is a completely new product for many people and usually identified as a ventilation fan. but in fact, it is not only a ventilator but more importantly an air filter and purifier especially designed for heavy haze weather and indoor pollution in china.
oas is currently used for commercial purpose in conjunction with central air conditioner, such as oas for hotels, banks and schools. there are not many oas for civilian uses but they are on the rise mainly for two reasons. one reason is heavy haze weather in china causing serious environmental issues; another reason is that people are more and more concern about their respiratory health.
marketing for oas is facing many problems and has come to bottlenecks as follows:
1.inadequate knowledge about oas
oas takes up only a small proportion of market share for less than 2% in china. when in need of air purifying, most people may go straight to air purifier but seldom come up with a oas. but in reality, oas and air purifier provide totally different purifying effects.
an air purifier doesn’t need complicated installation. it’s a plug and play unit. this is one of the key reasons why people prefer an air purifier though there are still many problems. for example, when used for indoor purification, an air purifier does not provide ventilation and easily leads to oxygen depletion and even causes secondary pollutions. oas, however, offers a healthy purification process that people can breathe in fresh outdoor air with doors and windows all shut.
2.housing conditions restricting the universal use of oas in china
oas was developed abroad and came into use in 1970s in european and american countries. oas market penetration in china is less than 2%. part of the reasons is that users need to punch holes through the walls for oas installation, which may somehow damage the original decoration of the house. even the simplest wall-mounted oas needs two through-wall holes, let alone ducted oas.
3.high price tag holding back chinese consumers’ appetite for oas
many oas consumers are held back by the high price tag and neglect the utility and efficacy of oas. consumers’ primary concern is the price. a wall-mounted system costs about ¥6,000 yuan. floor-standing and ceiling-mounted systems cost about ¥10,000 to ¥20,000 yuan, which are quite unacceptable for general groups.
